Delta’s service offer and LAX collision demand separate focus

Delta’s wine programme includes 13 wines supplied by 11 winery partners. Its onboard offer will also include Blanton’s single-barrel bourbon, which Delta describes as not otherwise offered by another airline. The commercial decision is narrow but concrete: determine whether this curated proposition merits continued emphasis as a service differentiator, based on its delivery and customer response.

The available evidence establishes the composition and claimed exclusivity of the offer, not its commercial effect. Management should therefore separate the proposition’s design from any judgement about its eventual value, and seek observable evidence from its operation before changing the service commitment.

At Los Angeles, a Delta Air Lines A350-900 collided with an Air Canada Boeing 777. The FAA has started an investigation and the NTSB has been notified; airport authorities and both airlines are also investigating the cause. These processes make the event an active operational constraint, irrespective of the separate customer-service initiative.

No passengers or crew on either flight were reported injured. That outcome limits neither the need to establish the cause nor the need for Delta’s operational leadership to keep the event under review while the investigations proceed.
